ChatGPT free limits in 2026: is it unlimited now?
Short answer: since August 2026, ChatGPT Free lets you chat as much as you want. What's still capped is everything heavier: uploading files and PDFs, making pictures, voice and data analysis. For studying from your own notes and slides, those are exactly the parts that run out.
What changed in August 2026
In the week of 10 August 2026, OpenAI made text chats unlimited on its Free and Go plans (Engadget). Its own help page now says: "Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools have separate usage limits." (OpenAI Help Center).
So if you saw "You've reached your limit" in 2025 while just chatting, that's mostly gone. If you see it in 2026, it's almost always because you sent a file, asked for a picture, or used voice.
What's still capped on ChatGPT Free
| ChatGPT Free | ChatGPT Plus | AI on your own PC (GreenCube) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text chat | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Files and PDFs | Capped (number not published) | Higher cap | No cap |
| Making pictures | Capped | Higher cap | No cap (needs 16 GB of RAM; 28 s to 2.5 min per picture in our tests) |
| Voice conversations | Capped | Higher cap | Not available |
| Ads | May appear in some countries | None | None |
| Works with no internet | No | No | Yes, after one download |
| Price | Free | $20 a month (about €23 in Spain) | €9.99 once |
Checked against OpenAI's help pages in October 2026 (Free tier, Plus, ads). OpenAI changes its plans often and doesn't publish the exact caps, so check Settings in ChatGPT for your own numbers. The Spanish price is from GEO Toolbox.
Why the caps are where they are
Reading a 40-page PDF or drawing a picture costs a cloud AI far more computing than a text reply, and on the Free plan someone has to pay for those servers. OpenAI itself says keeping the Free and Go plans running "requires significant infrastructure", which is the reason it gives for the ads (OpenAI). An AI running on your own PC doesn't have that problem: your graphics card does the work, so there is nothing to ration. The cost is that it's only as fast as your PC (we measured 7 PCs here).
So what should you use?
Stay on ChatGPT Free if…
you mostly chat and rarely upload files. Unlimited text covers most questions, and its models are stronger than anything that fits on a PC.
Pay for Plus if…
you need the strongest models, voice, or deep research every day, and $20 a month is fine for you.
Use an AI on your PC if…
you study from PDFs and slides a lot, want pictures without a counter, often have bad Wi-Fi, or don't want another subscription.
Or mix them
Lots of people use ChatGPT for quick questions and an AI on their own PC for the heavy, repetitive stuff like summarising a whole semester of PDFs.
Exam-season tip
Caps hurt most right before exams, when you want to turn every PDF into a summary and flashcards in one evening. Whatever you use, do the heavy stuff early in the week, and keep one tool with no counter for the night before.
Questions
Is ChatGPT free unlimited now?
For text, yes. Since August 2026, OpenAI's help page says Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. File and PDF uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis still have separate limits.
How many PDFs can I upload to ChatGPT for free?
OpenAI doesn't publish an exact number. Its help page says file uploads have their own usage limits on the Free plan, stricter than on paid plans, and ChatGPT tells you when you reach one.
Does ChatGPT free have ads?
It can. OpenAI started testing ads in the United States on 9 February 2026 and is rolling them out to Free and Go users in selected regions. Paid plans such as Plus have no ads, and OpenAI says it does not show ads to accounts it identifies as under 18.
How much does ChatGPT Plus cost?
OpenAI lists Plus at $20 a month. In Spain it is about 23 euros a month. It raises the limits on files, pictures and voice but it is still a monthly subscription.
Is there an AI with no limits on PDFs and pictures?
An AI that runs on your own PC has no daily or weekly caps, because nobody is paying for servers per message. GreenCube is one: no caps on chats, PDFs or pictures, works without internet, 9.99 euros once. The trade-off is that its speed depends on your PC.
