0.1.45Online answers you can trust, and pictures that just work
Two promises got real work in this update: answers from the web should be true, and nothing you make should leave your computer without you knowing.
"A small green cube on a wooden desk, soft morning light", made on our test laptop.
Ask for a table and get one you can save (shown in 0.1.48).
What's new
- Live data first. Prices, sports tables and the weather come from live data in seconds. Any listed company's share price works, and so does the weather on "Saturday" or "pasado mañana".
- Honest about what it can't find. News is searched with today's date and old stories are left out. If nothing reliable turns up about a name, GreenCube says so.
- Tables and study guides as cards you can open and save.
- Pictures stay on your computer, out of cloud sync, and work in folders with accents.
What we fixed
Pictures were quietly going to the cloud
GreenCube saved pictures in the Windows Pictures folder. OneDrive backs that folder up by default, so pictures went to Microsoft's cloud: the opposite of "nothing leaves your computer". Some of our own test pictures even went missing there. Pictures now live in GreenCube's own folder on your PC.
"Imágenes" became "Imágenes", and pictures vanished
The picture engine misread folder names with accents. It made a new folder with a garbled name, said "saved" there, and the app reported a failure. Pictures live under your Windows user name, so every José and every Begoña would have lost every picture. Now the engine works in a plain-named folder and the app moves the picture into place.
Sound from nowhere
With Online on, some pages are read in a hidden browser window, and a video on one of them could start playing. Every sound and video there is now muted the moment it appears.
Made-up companies
When a search about a name found nothing, the engine described an invented company anyway. Now it's asked one question first: do you really know this name? The honest cost: 2 of 23 famous names now get "I don't know", and only when the web found nothing too.
Made-up names it admits not knowing: 0 of 21 → 19 of 21.
A price target is not a price
A follow-up about a chip maker's next quarter came back as "trading at about $324". That was an analyst's target; the stock was at $226. Share prices now come from a real symbol search.
